Here’s A Houdini Card To Ponder

Worth A Look?

This card is on Ebay now and closes within 22 hours. The price is currently at $15.50US. It is a decent card and doesn’t surface as much as the “Boys’ Cinema” card does. It seems to have some old glue residue on the back, but it’s not too distracting. The card still is a bargain price and should see more bids in the last 10 seconds. Be on your toes if you want it. Here is the link to the auction.

Crooked Houdini Cards Are Back

This hasn't improved since the last time we saw it.

Here's another card to stay away from.

These two beauties just showed up again on Ebay after a two month absence. You would think after all that time, the edges would have been made straighter by now. There’s really nothing to lose, as they were almost worthless the last time they appeared. This way the would bat least  straight, worthless, but straight. I won’t even post the link to these.

Harry and Bess in London wishing William and Kate good luck on their marriage.

This is a cabinet photo of Houdini and Bess while they were in London. This is one image of a series of images Houdini with Bess and some  with his family.

The Decal To Die For

Kevin Connolly Collection

Kevin Connolly Collection

Here is a piece that’s high on every Houdini  collector’s want list, especially after last weeks magic auction. A similar decal sold for $4,500.00 including commission; its’ condition was not as good as this one. This has the tissue guards still intact on both sides. If you were to take them off, it would look like the one on the link below. Just scroll down a bit.

http://nnmagic.com/collectibles/collectiblespage.htm -

If you look at the bottom left of the image you can see “HOUDINI” printed in the corner. Neither the one in the auction or Norm’s seem to have it. I also think Houdini looks younger in mine. IMHO.

There are different theories on why this was produced. My theory is that the decal may have been used to promote Houdini’s “Red Magic”. Red Magic were bi-fold inserts that appeared in various newspapers of the day, much like comics are today. They contained mostly puzzles and some magic.

If you want to add this rare piece of magic history and Houdiniana, here is your chance. The price for this piece is $3,500.00.

No Respect For Houdini

Houdini Is Everywhere!

Keeping with the pair of Houdini cards I posted below, here’s two more. They were issued by Topps in 2005. The same card company that makes the baseball cards with the gum in the pack. The top image is a Garbage Pail Kids card showing Harry having a tough time of it. The image below is a tattoo. It is similar to the trading card, but it doesn’t have the background on it. If you’re Houdini collector that has to have it all, these are about $1.00 a piece on Ebay.

If you like decals, I’ll have the grand-daddy of Houdini decals on a little later. Please don’t have anything in your mouth when you click back in. And if you can swing it, bring your checkbook.

Earliest Photo Of Houdini?

Compliments Of "Leo"

As you all know, I’m always looking for Houdini material for here and my collection. This image has been submitted to HoudiniHimself and I’ll let you decide. Is this the earliest photo of Houdini?

Thanks Leo!

Houdini In Action In The Water Torture Cell

Bruce Averbook / Kevin Connolly Collections

When you go to the Houdini exhibit at Skirball, pick one of these up at the gift shop. It’s a lenticular card that when you move the card, the images changes. They did a great job with it.

Houdini At 98 Years Old….Not Bad!

Kevin Connolly Collection

Harry Houdini doesn’t look too bad for being 98 years old. This is one of the classic images of Houdini and probably the most desirable one. Some years back, not many,  3 or 4 of these turned up at various auctions over a year or so time period. If you thought the bidding and the final hammer prices were wild at the Christopher auction, these postcards were hotter.  From what I remember about the sales of these, the final  prices realized were from $10K to $15K each. It was amazing to see them easily reach ten thousand dollars each time they came up for sale. Since that time, I have not seen one offered for sale publicly.

This phenomenon happens in the world of collecting, but usually the prices start at a “normal” price and gradually go down. Take for instance when the Carter or George posters were unearthed. They started off at price in which most people could buy them, in multiples if you wanted to. Then everyone who wanted one had them. The market was satisfied, but there still many posters available. To move them, the posters dropped in price. Today, these same posters are starting to rise again in price. Why? Maybe new blood in the poster market, falling dollar, passage of time, who knows?

What does the magic collector do? Buy an item when it hits the market? Wait for another piece to hit and hope the price is lower? Or did you he/she just missed just pass on a piece they may never see again. That’s the quandary for the collector.
