These are two more items from the same seller with the one day auctions. I would say these are repros as well. The serial numbers on one image are partially missing in the Houdini sweating photo. I can’t see any numbers on the other image. I do see a price of $25.00 on the back of one of the items. Overall, I don’t see any patina or aging on the images; if they are over 90 years old, as they are suppose to be, patina and aging would be evident. You make the call. Here is the link:

This photo of Houdini and Burton King was listed just hours after the $199.00 Houdini items were listed by another seller. I wanted to post something about these, as it is just a one day listing. The other two Houdini photos are listed in a one day auction. Why? I don’t know.
The image above was probably printed in the late 1960′s into the 1970′s by Larry Shean. Although it says original on the back of the photo, it’s not an original Houdini era photo. I knew Larry and he had some original Houdini negatives. He had them developed and would sell them around the New York magic circle. They were very clear images, as they were first generation, but not Houdini era originals. You may want to consider this if you’re bidding.
As I previously mentioned, I am not trying to trash the seller or the items. Here is the link to this image. You can find the other two photos from the link in the auction.

In the last 12 hours or so, two Ebay sellers have listed about a dozen Houdini movie related items. Some are very nice and others have issues. First of all, I’m not trying to shoot down the sellers or degrade the items. I only intend to share information that I have on similar items that are in my collection or items that I have seen over the years while stalking Houdini.
Let’s start with “The Grim Game” piece above. As you can see, there are two images for this piece. It is a full page image printed on each side of the piece. Here is the rub; this is only half of what was originally issued. When this magazine insert was issued, it was a bi-fold piece. When it was first issued it had four pages, one large page that was folded in half and then stapled into a magazine.
Another issue with this piece is that it looks as though it has been trimmed at one time. If you look at the edges; you may be able to see it. Please click on the images above to enlarge them. Here is the link to the auction:

As I said previously, I am not trying to knock the sellers or the items. I only want to post these items, good or bad, to open them up for discussion.

This is another attempt by Hardeen to sell Houdini’s “Kellar Spirit Cabinet”. The cabinet has been offered at least 3 times so far; if you have been keeping up with this blog. Al Flosso and Joe Dunninger, both well established magicians of their time, had each been offered the cabinet at one time. Hardeen was willing to sell the cabinet for $250.00, perhaps even less. I find it amazing that Theo was having a hard time selling it. I know it’s $250.00 in 1943 dollars, but these guys weren’t pikers. We can only imagine how one could build a magic collection so cheaply back in the day. Please click on the letter to read it.

American Gothic With Houdini
This spooky photograph of Rose Mackenberg(sp?) and Jim Collins surfaced on Ebay the other day. Rose was with Houdini for many years. She did the advance work on the spiritualism exposure side of Houdini’s life. Houdini would send her ahead of his show to attend seances to see how the bogus spiritualist was contacting the dearly departed. James Collins, Houdini’s long time loyal assistant, is on the right. What stories he could have told and never did.
If you are interested in the photo the link is below. It already has a $99.00 bid on it, so be ready at the end.

With temperatures as hot as blazes, how about a little Christmas weather to cool things off? Houdini was very prolific in sending out Christmas cards. There must be a few dozen different ones he sent out over his lifetime. Go figure. if you’re hot, go watch “The Man From Beyond”. That should keep you cool.

This piece should make for some interesting reading today. I believe it is an index card from Theo Hardeen to someone named Sam. It was attached to four typed pages of Houdini items for sale. The majority of the items are priced under $10.00 each. There are three pages describing cuffs that were used on the lobby boards displayed by Houdini outside of the theater. Hardeen was selling them singularly! There is another page with items from Houdini’s basement. I think the “Sub Trunk” and the “Milk Can” were Houdini’s. The prices should make you faint.
So, before Joseph Yadah or Radner, this person had their shot. One can only imagine what Houdini letters and posters were being sold for. It is possible that they might have even been given away.
I will post more from the list later today; so check back when you can.

Above are the first two pages of the list. There are some serious Houdini and handcuff related items listed. Let me know which one you would want to have in your collection.

With Houdini books and movies carrying the Houdini torch from the 1950′s to new Houdini themed projects that are slated for the year 2012 and beyond; there is little chance that Houdini will ever be forgotten. These projects that are aimed towards those from the age of 15 to 50 may just raise Houdini’s pedestal a little higher. With this scenario a new theory is born “Houdini as Pop Culture” or maybe “Houdini and His Future.” According to the UK medical world, the person who will live to 150 years old has already been born. If that is true, that life cycle can only cement Houdini’s position as the greatest magician, escape artist, showman and entertainer of all times, whichever description works for you.
