It seems Harry Houdini stirred-up a hornets nest on his last tour while in Chicago. This is affidavit was brought about by Anna Wardell against Houdini for slander. The incident supposedly happened during his engagement at the Princess Theater in Chicago in March of 1926. This was the time Houdini was promoting “Fraud Mediums of Chicago”. The plaintiff was suing for slander, ruining her reputation, etc. The sum her lawyers were suing for was for $50,000. This was certainly a huge sum of money in 1926 dollars. It would seem the lawyers pulled that number out of hat, similar to what a magician would do with a rabbit.
And you thought Houdini just had handcuff kings to watch out for.
